Payne, E.F. – Model 101

  • For your consideration is an all original E.F. Payne Model 101 bamboo fly rod. This is a 7' 6" two-piece for a 5 weight line weighing 3.65 oz. Some might like a 4 weight on it. A 4 weight DT 406 almost worked on it for me when lawn casting and I have a short slow stroke.

This rod consists of medium tempered cane with brown wraps tipped gold. The 5 3/4" grip is mildly soiled but remains smooth. The butt cap is stamped "Sold by Abercrombie & Fitch, New York." The bluing is in very good condition with the most prominent wear appearing on the female ferrule. There are a few stress cracks in the wraps with one tip showing very little use. In my hand, the action is on the fast side of medium-fast. The tag is marked 7 1/2' and 3 ounces with overwriting where the model is. A 100 is usually in the 3.25 to 3.375 ounce range. This rod has a faster dry fly demeanor and weighs in the range of a 101. The rod tube is about 1/2" longer than the usual 7' 6" Payne tube.
