Payne, E.F. – Model 108

  • For your consideration is an ultra rare E.F. Payne Model 108 Light Dry Fly bamboo fly rod. This is a 9' 0" two-piece for a 6 weight line weighing 5.70 oz. Don Schroeder has been building and refinishing rods for over 40 years and this is the first one he has seen.

This rod consists of medium tempered cane with brown wraps tipped warm red (indicating a 9' rod) with a diminutive agate stripping guide. This has a 6 3/8" grip with up-locking aluminum hardware. In my hand, the action is on the fast side of medium-fast and feels lighter than expected. This can be explained by the smaller size 15 ferrule on a rod of this length. The Payne buttery smooth aura is instilled in this rod and is the nicest casting 6 weight dry fly rod I have handled. This rod has been professionally rebuilt by Don Schroeder with a new grip, wraps, varnish, and bluing. Bob Summers always comments on Don's work by saying "it does not get any better." Includes the original, bag, and tube with the original felt pad lining the cap.

This is a rare model that would serve any Payne collection well to be added to its quiver.
