Available to you is a very difficult to source Payne Model 200 bamboo fly rod. This is an 8' 0" 3/2, weighing 3.90 oz. This particular rod has been preferred with a 4wt by all casting it but could handle a 5wt if needed for larger flies. All sections are full length and straight. Steve Blake masterfully restored the varnish two-years ago.
This rod features medium tempered cane with Payne dark brown wraps tipped yellow. Blued cap and sliding band over Spanish cedar spacer. The cork grip shows very minimal signs of ridging. The Payne stamp dates the rod to the early 1930s. On the butt cap is stamped "Sold By Von Lengerke & Antonie." History suggests Al Capone's gang purchased their firearms here in the early '30s — I imagine this was not by VL&A's choice. Size 10/64 and 15/64 ferrules with a perfect fit. In my hand, the rod is on the medium side of medium-fast and buttery smooth. The rod has not been fished since the work by Steve Blake was completed. Original bag and tube.
