For your consideration is a Payne model 202 bamboo fly rod. This is an 8' 0" 3/2 5 wt weighing 4.80 oz. (aluminum hardware accounts for 0.50 oz. of the weight). All sections are full-length and straight.
This rod features medium-tempered cane with Payne dark brown wraps tipped yellow with oxidized guides. Payne-style grip measures 6" in length. Aluminum up-locking hardware. Ferrules are 10/16 with a perfect fit. In my hand, the action is on the fast side of medium-fast and buttery smooth. In the 1952 Catalog, the 202 is listed as a fast dry fly taper. The butt section is built for reserve power with lighter tips at 0.067. Retains the Payne aura but is quicker and throws clothesline tight loops with ease. This rod arrived in my hands in all original condition only needing attention to the varnish and a few wraps. I had Steve Blake strip and rewrap the entire rod and give this new varnish. Everything else is original – cork, bamboo, bluing throughout, and hardware. Includes the original bag, original sticker, and tube.
