For your consideration is an E.F. Payne Model 103 bamboo fly rod. This is an 8' 0" 2/2 for a 5 weight line, weighing 4.0 ounces. Roll-stamped on the butt cap is Charles Phair Rod. Charles Phair was the author of "Atlantic Salmon Fishing" which was considered at the time to be the definitive work on American salmon angling. He was also a contributing writer to the Payne catalogs. All sections are full-length and straight.
This rod consists of medium tempered cane with dark brown silk wraps tipped yellow with a red agate stripping guide. The 7 1/4" cork grip was custom-made for Charles Phair – a perfect match for those liking the longer grips of modern builders. All of the previously mentioned date this rod to the late 1940s or very early 1950s. Cap and ring over wood spacer. The ferrule is size 12.5 with a perfect fit. In my hand, the action is on the medium side of medium-fast with the buttery smooth feeling of a Payne. Steve Blake has masterfully refinished this rod with new wraps, varnish, and bluing to the ferrules. Original bag and tube.
