Blackburn, Bill – 8' 3" 4wt Penta

  • For your consideration is a new Bill Blackburn penta, hollow-built bamboo fly rod. This is an 8' 3" two-piece 4-weight weighing 3.75 ounces. I personally liked this with both a 4 and 5 DT line.

This rod consists of medium tempered cane with transparent brown wraps that match the spacer tonality. The black intermediate wrap coordinates with the bluing. The 5 3/4" inch grip is followed by a blued cap and ring over a highly modeled mortised cherry spacer. In my hand, the action is medium-fast. This rod has the ability to present small flies delicately but has reserve power in the butt for longer casts or large fish. I found myself casting 60' with the ease of what I cast at 30.'

Bill is focusing on rods he wants to build. This five-sided penta is one of these because the rod bends at the apex adding power. He described it as having an extra "spank." This is hollow-built for quicker recovery scalloped up to 12" to 15" from the tip tops. He has been naming his rods after famous jazz musicians. This is "Duke" after Duke Ellington.
