For sale is a 2 3/4” diameter Carpenter and Casey wide spool fly reel for a 4 weight line weighing 4.65 oz. Serial number 117 stamped on the aluminum reel foot. This reel is stunning in its simplicity of design and quality of craftsmanship.
This appears to be unfished and doubtful a line was ever spooled on it. The simple click and pawl can be easily converted to use as either right or left-hand wind – currently set for LHW. Nice serpentine-shaped handle attaching directly to the spool flange with a nickel silver counterbalance. Comes with original soft leather reel pouch and Walt Carpenter's business card with his notes written on it.
Walt Carpenter cut his teeth in rod building at the E.F. Payne Rod Company. His "Browntone" models are made with the same enthusiasm and integrity as the creations of his predecessors, making him a true ambassador of the "Hudson Valley" or "Catskill" school of rod makers. His rods indeed trace their lineage to the works of Fred Thomas, Eustis Edwards and Jim Payne.
