Halstead, G.H. – 8' 3" 4/5 wt.

  • For your consideration is a very desirable George Halstead bamboo fly rod. This is an 8' 3" three-piece for a 4 or 5 weight line weighing 4.60 oz. This rod feels like it would be ideal on the Willowemoc or Beaverkill fishing small dries with the 4 and fishing larger flies with the 5 line.

This rod consists of medium tempered cane with antique brass colored wraps tipped burgundy with an agate stripping guide. The grip has a slightly tapered cigar shape displaying some soiling and minor ridging with a few indents which might have been caused by the guides in storage. Down-locking hardware bearing the "G.H. Halstead Rods" stamp over a walnut insert. Pinky Gillum shared George Halstead's work space with him so it's possible the wood spacer came from Pinky. In my hand, the rod is a very delightful medium taper with much of the action in the upper two thirds. This felt most comfortable on the lawn with a 5 line at 20 feet. At 25-30 feet a 4 line was loading this rod. Masterfully refinished by Steve Blake and has spent minor time on the water since the work was done.
