For your consideration is a Gary Howells bamboo fly rod. This is an 8' 0" 2/2 4wt weighing 3.9 oz (written as 3 5/8 oz. on the rod). Serial number 5923 dating this to 1993.
This rod consists of mildly tempered cane with brown wraps, yellow tipping, and chrome guides. A well proportioned western style grip measures 5 3/4" in length. Up-locking aluminum hardware over zebra wood spacer. Ferrule is size 13. Ferrules could use a mild cleaning to allow them to set completely. In my hand, the action is a true medium. Progressive taper bends deep into the rod. Includes the original bag and labeled tube. This rod has been used sparingly and cared for which is apparent by the condition of the grip.
When casting this rod I noticed the tip recovery was quicker than most Howells rods I have cast. Robert Bolt shared with me in Gary's later years of building his rods are mostly solid built. This rod appears to fall in this category.
