Nigro, Tom – 7'6" 5wt

  • For your consideration is a Tom Nigro quadrate bamboo fly rod. Tom built rods under the name "Spring Creek Rods." This is a 7' 6" two-piece for a 5-weight line weighing 3.65 ounces. I'm told that it's difficult to get quads straight. This rod is dead straight and the finish work and minimal aesthetics are exceptional.

This rod consists of medium tempered cane with transparent honey wraps and black silks at the ferrules. There are two black metal bands that form the combination wind and check and hook keeper and then two decorative wraps. These are spaced to use the space between the two bands as a third line. There are then three decorative wraps to continue the pacing of three that then frame the inscription - a well thought out detail. The 6" cigar cork grip is smooth and finished with a cap and ring over a well modeled spacer that compliments the blank tone. In my hand, the action is medium-fast with feel deep into the butt section. Tom was a Pennsylvania builder who did not build for a lengthy period, but he and his work are very well respected.
