Schroeder, D.G. – 7' 0" 4wt Mokume-Gane Hardware

  • For your consideration is a new Don Schroeder bamboo fly rod that comes directly from Don. This is a 7' 0" three-piece for a 4-weight weighing 3.55 ounces. Serial number 66025. Bob Summers says, "Don's workmanship is as good as it gets."

The butt cap, sliding band, winding check, reel seat check, and ferrule plugs are all made from a metal produced in the ancient art of Mokume-Gane. Mokume-Gane is a Japanese metalworking technique that creates a distinctive, layered "wood grain" pattern by fusing several layers of differently colored precious metals. Each bar used for this hardware is made from 45 to 90 individual layers of copper, brass, and nickel silver. The individual pieces are meticulously cleaned and then fused under heat and pressure. Don is machining hardware from this metal in limited quantities.

This rod consists of a lightly tempered cane with copper brown silks The cigar grip measures 6" in length. The Mokume-Gane metal cap and ring are over a well-modeled tiger maple spacer which complements the cane color handsomely. As an additional detail, Don has fitted a piece of tiger maple in the tube cap and base. In my hand, the action is medium-fast. This rod is brand new and direct from the highly respected Wisconsin maker Don Schroeder.
