For your consideration is an early Tom Dorsey and Tom Maxwell Thomas & Thomas Sans Pareil bamboo fly rod with full intermediates and three tips original to the build. This is an 8' 6" 2/3 4wt weighing 4.40 oz. Serial #2580. All sections are full length and straight.
The medium tempered cane is completed with thoughtful consideration to the aesthetics and relationship between the necessary wraps and full intermediates. The guides are wrapped in a transparent honey with black tipping. Finished in a deep chestnut brown are the intermediates, hook keeper and stripping guide. Glass like varnish finish. An interpretive cigar style grip measures 6" in length tapering flush with the wood spacer— a T&T trademark of this era. An added bonus is Maxwell's distinctive script. Classic cap and ring. Ferrule is size 15 and fits perfectly. Numbered tips with one, two, and three dots for ease of rotation. The action is on the medium side of medium-slow. Includes the original bag with dowel stiffener and leather over aluminum tube rod case. The rod was originally built with a nickel silver locking reel seat. The weight of this made it difficult to find a small enough reel to balance. Steve Blake replaced this for the owner with a cap and ring reel seat ordered from T&T. A delight to cast. Would make a great small dry fly or soft hackle wand on a spring creek.
