Young, Paul H.- Dry Fly Special 8' 6"

  • For your consideration is a Paul Young Dry Fly Special bamboo fly rod. This is an 8' 6" 3/2 for a 5 or 6 weight line, weighing 4.80 ounces. All sections are full-length and straight.

In the late 1930s and early 1940s prior to owning his own equipment, Paul Young sold rods built by Heddon with his name on them. He began making his own rods in 1946. This is one of the nicer grip examples with Heddon Model 35 or 50 ferrules and hardware.

This rod consists of medium tempered cane with dark cabernet wraps tipped with bronze. Handsome intermediate pattern at the tenite/bakelite winding check. The 7 3/8" grip has a flattened thumb impression. The cork is soiled but remains smooth. Cap and ring over wood spacer. The ferrules are sizes 11 and 18 with a perfect fit. In my hand, the action is on the medium side of medium-fast and full working with reserve power. The tip and upper third demonstrate a delicacy for dry fly fishing. Original bag and tube.
