For your consideration is a Payne model 100 bamboo fly rod. This is a 7' 6" 2/2 3wt or 4wt weighing 3.25 oz. The tips mic at 0.0625 which puts this in the range of a later 100L. All sections are full length and straight.
This rod features medium tempered cane with Payne chestnut silk wraps tipped yellow. Oxidized guides accompanied by a red agate stripping guide with a diminutive opening. Original cork with 1/4" and 3/8" rings in a Payne-style grip measuring 5 1/4" in length. Classic cap and ring over a wood spacer. Tips, agate, and cork rings suggest this is circa mid-1930s to later 1940s. This rod begs for a silk line. Ferrule size is 10 1/2 with a perfect fit. In my hand, the action is on the medium side of medium-fast and buttery smooth. Steve Blake rewrapped and varnished this rod. Original cork and bluing remain in excellent condition. Complete with original tag, bag, and tube.
