For your consideration is a very rare EF Payne 100L bamboo fly rod. This is a 7' 6" 2/2 3 wt. weighing 2.85 oz. All sections are full length and straight.
The 100L with no metal ring between the cork and wood spacer is seldom seen. Often, we see the late-1920s to mid-1930s model 100 listed as a 100L because the early 100s have a similar taper of what later became the 100L. However, these have a metal ring between the cork and wood spacer and typically weigh an additional 0.375 oz.
This rod consists of medium tempered cane with chestnut silk wraps and gold tipping. Oxidized guides accompanied by a red agate stripping guide with a diminutive opening. Cork rings are 1/4" and 3/8" in a Payne-style grip measuring 5 1/4" in length. The cork butts to the wood spacer with no metal ring. Classic cap and ring over a beautifully modeled walnut wood spacer. The butt cap is stamped "Sold by Abercrombie & Fitch." The ferrule is size 10 1/2 with a perfect fit – Payne was known for using 1/2 size ferrules. In my hand, the action is medium with a delightful light dry fly characteristic along with the buttery smooth aura of all Paynes. I believe a silk 3wt or 4wt would be sublime. This rod was masterfully refinished by Steve Blake. Includes the original bag and tube.
