Payne, E.F. – Model 97-L

For your consideration is a very rare EF Payne 97-L bamboo fly rod in all original condition. This is a 7' 0" 2/1 3 wt. weighing 2.55 oz. All sections are full length and straight.

In 1963 the "Sold by Abercrombie & Fitch" stamp was changed to "Made for Abercrombie & Fitch." At this time, to compete with the growing popularity and price point of fiberglass rods, the Payne shop began making single tip rods. The bags continued to be made for two tips. It's very likely this is one of these one tip rods.

This rod consists of medium tempered cane with chestnut silk wraps and gold tipping. The grip measures a well-proportioned 5" in length. Classic cap and ring over a beautifully modeled walnut wood spacer. The ferrule is size 9 with a perfect fit. In my hand, the action is medium with a delightful light dry fly characteristic along with the buttery smooth aura of all Paynes. The rod is in all original condition. Includes the original bag, tube, and for added clout, the original hangtag.
