Doug Daniels Blank_8'3" 5wt Quad

  • For your consideration is a quad bamboo rod built on a Doug Daniels blank by Robert Davidson. This is an 8' 3" two-piece for a 5-weight line weighing 4.8 ounces. Marked for a 5-weight line, I feel this could also handle a 6-weight as well.

This rod consists of medium tempered cane with chestnut brown silks. The grip is a modified Wells with a highly modeled wood spacer accenting the blank and silk coloring. In my hand, the action is medium-fast bending into the lower area of the butt section. This is a powerful rod capable of handling a lot of line but still retains the feel and sensitivity for small flies. The ferrules could use some mild cleaning to aid in them completely setting. The varnish work is very professional. There are a few areas in the guide wraps with air between the silk winds but only noticeable upon close inspection. I'm told this is hollowbuilt. However, I was surprised it weighs 4.8 ounces. This may come from the more modern sized grip...?
